When you click the gear icon ⚙️ in Salesforce, you enter Setup – the control center for everything from users to custom fields. But the experience is very different depending on whether you’re in Lightning Experience or Classic.
Lightning Experience Setup
- Modern, clean interface
- Left sidebar with categories (Users, Company Settings, Objects, etc.)
- Quick Find box at the top – type anything (e.g., “Permission Sets”) and jump straight there
- Most new features only appear here (Flow Builder, Dynamic Forms, etc.)
Classic Setup
- Old-school look with horizontal tabs across the top
- No Quick Find – you have to click through sections
- Some very old features (like old page layouts) are still easier to find here
- Feels slower and more cluttered
Pro tip for daily work:
Stay in Lightning Experience 99% of the time. Only switch to Classic from the profile menu if you’re troubleshooting something ancient (rare!).
Quickest way to master Lightning Setup?
Just type in the Quick Find box. Example: type “profiles” → hit Enter → done. It’s faster than clicking through menus in any other CRM.
